We dance as children
Pure, innocent, unselfconscious
We dance into adolescence
As wandering eyes track our moves
And expectations creep around our shoulders
Our dance narrows as we dodge the arrows
Shame, Fear, Fragility
No one escapes completely
Dances change, pause, even fall
Spirits crushed and confused
Desparation becomes a steady companion
Yet I know of those who dance on
Wounded and aggrieved
Leaping through bitterness and anger
A warning cry
A lament, a story unfinished, a reimagining
Stories that shine a path
We dance the wisdom of our pain
We dance to save ourselves
We dance and we are free
